Obituary

Barbara Evans-Abernathy Moon was born on the 25th day of July in 1956 on the Army base in the city of Verdun, France. This historic base was established as a part of NATO “to maintain peace and protect the liberties we enjoy.” Barbara was the fourth child born to the union of Richard N. Evans Sr and Emma (Green) Evans. Barbara’s father Richard N. Evans Sr. was stationed there as a soldier. His wife, Emma (Green) Evans was by his side as he served this great nation. As a child she loved animals, horseback riding, and playing outside. Barbara graduated from Northwest high school in Clarksville, Tennessee where she was a majorette, in addition to being selected by her classmates as Homecoming Queen and Valentine’s day Queen. Following in the footsteps of her eldest brother Richard Jr. Barbara pursued higher education and attended both Vanderbilt and Fisk Universities. During her matriculation at Fisk University she pledged and became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated.

On a sun-filled day in May, Barbara married Charles Francis Moon. May 9th, 1978 began a lifelong journey and commitment to love one another and raise a family together. Their love and family grew in Chattanooga, Tennessee where Charles was born and raised. Barbara was a lifelong member of Second Baptist Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Barbara was also a member of The Links Incorporated, Carrots, and Jack and Jill of America.

Barbara and Charles were blessed to travel and live in different cities as career opportunities continually opened for them! Through her adult years, Barbara lived in Durham, North Carolina, Louisville, Kentucky, and Frederick, Maryland. Most recently, she was employed at Kaiser Permanente Insurance from 2012 until her death. She was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church in Frederick, MD where she continued to grow in faith and grace, that she displayed constantly as a loving wife and mother of four children and grandmother of nine. Barbara prided herself as being a loving and devoted wife, extraordinary mother, and amazing grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Evans Sr.; mother, Emma G Abernathy; step-father, James E. Abernathy; only son, Charles Abernathy Moon; sister, Deborah A. Williams; brother, Samuel Evans, and nephew SGT. David V. Williams.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Charles Francis Moon; children, Chanee A. Moon, Chanel (Jamal) Wilkerson, Charis Evans Moon, and Charee (Chon) Broughton. Barbara leaves a host of joyous memories for her oldest brother, Dr. Richard (Beverly) Evans, and youngest sister, Edna Abernathy to cherish.

Barbara’s grandchildren were the joy of her life and she loved them dearly and enjoyed spending time with them all: Ciara Broughton, Cimaria Broughton, Cyree Broughton, Kylen Wombal, Camerin Moon, Aaydian Moon, Jaylynn Moon, Laylynn Moon, and Lola-Ann Moon. Barabara’s memories will also live on with three nieces, many cousins, and a host of friends who will greatly miss her.

Public viewing will be held 12:30 - 1:00 pm Saturday, May 22, 2021, at the funeral home, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 pm.

Arrangements by John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Avenue, 423-622-9995.

Dear Charles,
Hal and I were so saddened to learn of the loss of sweet Barbara. She was a lovely, gracious lady, and the two of you raised a beautiful family together. Although we haven't been able to visit with you in many years, we have often thought about you and reminisced. You and your precious family are in our hearts and thoughts.
