Obituary

Willie “Lead Belly” Higgins transitioned from this world to be with our Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 28, 2021, at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was born on Sunday, March 31, 1940, to Glen Higgins and Ara Higgins. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sheila Higgins; brother, Paul James Higgins and sister, Patricia Ann Higgins.

Mr. Higgins was a loyal and faithful member of Orchard Knob Missionary Baptist Church and served on the Usher Ministry until declining health prevented his attendance. He graduated from Howard High School and afterward was employed by Wheland Foundry until he retired in 1993. He was a dedicated football fan who watched all of the games and also enjoyed watching “In the Heat of the Night” and “The Price Is Right.”

Willie leaves to cherish his memory wife, Barbara Higgins; five daughters, Felecia Carter, Chattanooga, TN, Ara (Billy) Collier, Huntsville, AL, Margaret (Kenneth) Baxter, New Market, AL, Gwendolyn Higgins, Huntsville, AL, Taneshia (Willie) Foster, Chattanooga, TN; two stepdaughters, Sabrina Boswell and Carla Richardson, both of Chattanooga, TN; three stepsons, Michael Ross and Kevin Ross, Chattanooga, TN and Louis Ross, Dallas, TX; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

Public viewing will be held, 9:00 AM-12:00 PM, Monday, February 8, 2021, at the funeral home, followed by a 1:00 PM graveside service. Interment: Lakewood Memory Gardens-EAST.

Arrangements by John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Avenue, 423-622-9995.

Uncle Leadbetter,
1 John 4:7-8 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from GOD, and whoever loves has been born of GID and knows GOD. Anyone who does not love does not know GOD, because GOD IS LOVE.
Thank you for loving me unconditionally. I will miss talking to you. I will miss hearing your laughter as we shared our personal memories. You will always be in my heart. Death has no stronghold on the love that we have for one another. I’m so glad that our last words to each other was “I love you.” GOD loved you more and he whispered your name, and you answered his call. Fare thee well, until we meet again.
