Sherman (Major) Bowles went from the land of the dying to the land of the living. on December 27, 2020 at 4:30 p.m. He was the seventh child born to James O. and Fannie Mae Bowles Sr., on October 8, 1941. Major attended Ft. Cheatham Elementary and Howard High School. Known for his outstanding talent in football, he was instrumental in the 1961 TN State High School Football Championship which was featured in the City Scope magazine. Major was loved dearly by family and friends and more importantly by our Lord and Savior.
He was preceded in death by parents: James O. and Fannie Mae Bowles; siblings: Mollie H. Bowles, Henry W. Bowles Sr., Thomas (Gwendolyn) Bowles; Father and mother in-law: Arthur and Bernice Calhoun.
He leaves to cherish his memories: devoted and loving wife: Sylvia C. Bowles; daughter: Sharon Bowles; sons, Shermaine Bowles and Gregory Belue; 8 grandchildren: Keosha and Kuchara Moore, Shermany, Malik, Christian, Sherquilla, Shermaine Jr. and Tramaine; 6 great grandchildren; siblings: James O. Bowles Jr., Jean Bowles and Shirley Bowles Ryan; In-laws: Hazel R. Bowles, Joyce C. Bowles, Lillie R. Carter; Rev. James (Terry) Calhoun and Raymond (Janice) Calhoun; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Public viewing will be held 9:00 am -12:00 pm Thursday, January 21, 2021 at the funeral home, followed by a graveside service at 1:00 pm. Interment: Highland Cemetery.
