Obituary for Sandy Betts
Sandy Betts was born on May 22,1939, to the late Rev. John H. Betts, Sr. and Anna Lee Stoudemire Betts in Madison, Alabama. He departed this life on November 29, 2022, peacefully in his home.
Sandy was educated in the Madison County Public School system. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
Sandy accepted Christ at an early age. Later, as a spiritual act of rededication, he was baptized in 1992. He was a member of New Covenant Fellowship Church.
Sandy had a long career at Bunge Oil and retired on March 22, 2013, with 44 years of service.
He loved traveling to different places to give his critique of the local hotels. Although he loved to watch the Lady Vols and the Kentucky Wildcats, he was known for his love of baseball, especially the Atlanta Braves.
He became a fan favorite among his great nieces and nephews who loved to come over and hang with Uncle Sandy. He’s known for sitting in his famous recliner. You could find him listening to music while reading his paper or telling one of his famous stories. His sense of humor was unmatched, and he had a signature smile with his gold teeth. You knew you were going to laugh in his presence.
Sandy was a loving and caring person, to know him was to love him. He was a wonderful balance of sound advice, strong counsel and unconditional love. He always said, “If I tell you I love you, I mean it.” He lived his life to the fullest and wanted everyone around him to do the same. He will be greatly missed.
Sandy was preceded in death by two sisters, Mae Florence Betts and Gertrude Crutcher, and three brothers, Joseph Betts, Charlie Betts and John H. Betts, Jr.
He leaves to cherish his memory: a loving wife, Evia D. Betts; two daughters, Veronica Blevins of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Stephanie D. Little (Richard) of Matthews, North Carolina; one son, Bernard Betts of Chattanooga, Tennessee; five grandchildren, Bernard Neal, Gloria Neal, Joshua Blevins, all of Chattanooga, Tennessee, PFC Cameron Hughes of Honolulu, Hawaii and Cailyn Hughes of Matthews, North Carolina; one sister, Martha Betts Conley of Huntsville, Alabama; sister-in-law, Carol Sullivan of Chattanooga, Tennessee; special friends Nathan Burch and Stanley Mills of Chattanooga, Tennessee; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Public viewing will be held from 10:30 am-11:30 am, Tuesday, December 6, 2022, at New Covenant Fellowship Church, 1326 N. Moore Road, followed by an 11:30 am funeral service.
Interment: Chattanooga National Cemetery. Gate time:1:30 pm
