Obituary for Marsha Conway Salter

Marsha Conway Salter passed away on February 22, 2022. She was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga. She was a graduate of Notre Dame High School and the University of Chattanooga.

Marsha taught at Saint Francis School and All Saints Academy for 13 years and retired from Girl Scouts of Moccasin Bend Council after 23 years of service. Children were her life’s work!

Marsha was active in many organizations throughout her life. She was a member of the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul where she served on the Parish Council for a number of years and as the council chairperson . She was also an active member of the Lector Ministry. She served on the Notre Dame School Board for many years.

Marsha was involved in the League of Women Voters all her adult life. She served as president of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County League for many years as well as other positions. She was a former member of the Tri-State Scorers and Umpires Association. She umpired at many of the softball and baseball fields in the Chattanooga area. She was also a swim referee for the Chattanooga Area Swim League for over 20 years. Marsha was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and held several positions while at the university. She remained actively involved as an alumna.

Marsha was most known for her Irish background and along with her husband Jim for their St. Patrick’s Day Parties!

Marsha was preceded in death by her parents Jane and Joe Conway and her brother William G. Conway.

She is survived by her husband James Loring Salter. They were married for 53 years. She is also survived by their daughter Margaret Paige Salter Hassel and her husband Jim and grandsons Christopher and Brett of Bartlett, TN. She is survived by her brothers Steve Conway, his wife Charla Conway of Chattanooga and Joe Conway (Sharon Suggs) of San Leandro, CA. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Sarah Salter , and Jan Conway; brother-in-law Kirk Salter;nephews Ian and Will Conway and nieces Clare Conway and Kate Salter Goode, her dear cousins Donna Thurman of Bartlett, TN, Patrick Conway of Pittsburgh, PA and also by many friends both recent and lifelong.

Honorary pallbearers are her former All Saints Academy Students and faculty, Alpha Delta Pi Sisters, and the Notre Dame High School Class of 1964.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at the Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul on March 19th at 1:30pm . Visitation will be 1 hour before Mass and a reception in the parish hall afterwards. Burial will be private.
