Obituary for Lillie Mae McCullough
Mrs. Lillie Mae McCullough departed this earthly life on April 11, 2022, at Standifer Place, a local health care facility. Mrs. McCullough was born in Lexington, Mississippi, on February 12, 1926, to the late Phillip and Isabella Torry. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Calvin McCullough; sons, Clifford Lee McCullough and Ervin Lamar McCullough; granddaughter, Latoya Torrey; grandson, Terrance McCullough, Sr., great-grandson, Keyan Demetrius Watkins Peoples; sisters, Rose Lee Hodges and Cindy Mae Torrey; brothers, Sylvester Torrey, Jim Torrey and Lee Torrey.
Mrs. Lillie Mae McCullough traveled from Lexington, Mississippi to Memphis, TN and then to Chattanooga, where she started her family. She worked for Penns and Scrubs Bakery and would later go on to retire from Central Soya Poultry Plant. Mrs. McCullough was one of the oldest members of Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful and loyal member. She was the oldest member of the Oak Hills community and a longtime member of PACE Senior Citizens Daycare, known as Alexian Brothers. She was a pillar of her community.
Mrs. Lillie Mae McCullough established the “Day and Night Stand” in the rear of her home, where she became known as the Candy Lady. She opened her home for foster care, where she cared for many children. She loved flowers, trucks and her family. Lillie Mae was the very first to plan our family reunion and served as the matriarch that held our family together.
She leaves to cherish her memories, children, Terry Lebron (Michelle) McCullough, Estell (Marva) Torrey, and Roy Chester McCullough; granddaughters, Aletta Freeman, Tawana McCullough, Treyshonda High, Malonie Sailes, Evelyn McCullough, and Tiffany Marsh, all Chattanooga, Valencia, Pryor of Huntsville, Alabama; grandsons, Anthony Torrey, Jamal Torrey, Lajoune Torrey, Carlos McCullough, Thomas McCullough; a host of grands and great-grandchildren.
Public viewing will be held from 2:00 PM-6:00 PM, Monday, April 18, 2022, at the funeral home, with the family receiving friends from 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM. The funeral service will begin at 11:30 am Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 4100 Highland Avenue, Chattanooga. Interment: Chattanooga National Cemetery.
