Mr. James Michael Smith “Red” was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on February 26, 1961. James proudly and fearlessly served his country as a Sergeant and Rifleman in the United States Marine Corps. During his thirteen years of service, which took place during the Persian Gulf war, James earned the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, National Defense Service and Good Conduct medals, Rifle Expert Badge, and many other awards. James, who also earned a postsecondary degree during his time in the Marine Corps, continued to serve with the Department of Veterans Affairs until he fell ill.
James was principled, a man of faith and integrity, an independent thinker, and an entrepreneurial individual who sought to pass those qualities onto the younger generation, to include his daughter and son. He was a resolute family man who valued his time and memories with his family, which spans the states of Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee, and includes the Smith, Caslin, and Gurley families.
James Michael Smith was preceded in death by his mother Freddie Pauline Bates, his father James Edward Powell, and his grandparents Fred and Mary Smith.
Survivors include his two children: Angelo J. (Kia) Smith (Washington, DC) and Khamesha Smith (Chattanooga, TN); three grandchildren: Avery Smith (Chattanooga, TN), Amari and Ava Smith (Washington, DC); his brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
