Obituary for Issiah Harrison Cherry

Issiah Harrison Cherry was born on September 7, 1947, to the late Isaac and Ina Cherry. He transitioned into eternity on August 29,2022. Isaiah was raised in Macon, GA, where he was educated in the Bibb County Public School system. He graduated from Ballard Hudson High School in 1964. After graduation from high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and served several tours of duty in Vietnam as a construction engineer. Upon completion of his tour with the United States Army, he moved to Chattanooga, TN where he gained employment with BASF. He continued to serve in the Army Reserve where he served with distinction until his retirement, rising to the rank of staff Sergeant, E-6.

After moving to Chattanooga, He met and married the love of his life, Charlene Bivins. This union lasted until his passing. Isaiah and Charlene enjoyed cooking and sharing their hospitality with family and friends. You could always count on both welcoming guests to their home with open arms and a full table. Issiah had a contagious smile and a wonderful gift of humor which he shared with anyone he met. He was an avid Tennessee Volunteers fan who never gave up on his team. He also enjoyed spending time with his older brother, Johnny Cherry, and when the two of them got together, you were treated to a comedy show. Issiah was preceded in death by his father Isaac Cherry, mother, Ina Cherry; siblings, Bernice Jackson, Isaac “Buddy” Cherry, Mildred Willis, Willie Billingsley, and Eleanor Gaytan; grandson, Izyiah Spence.

He will be eternally loved and missed by his wife, Charlene, and his son, Isaac Moore; stepson, Calvin Reed; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; brother, Johnny Cherry; six nephews, nine nieces; one sister/cousin Ruth Swint; a host of other relatives and friends. He will be especially missed by his United States Army Reserve lunch buddies who met each month to renew their friendship.

Public viewing will be held from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM, Sunday, September the 11th, at the John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Avenue, 423-622-9995. A 12:30 PM funeral service will be held in the Chapel of the Funeral Home on Monday, September 12, 2022.

Interment Chattanooga National Cemetery. Gate time 2:00 PM.
