Obituary for Irene Scruggs Midgett

Irene Scruggs-Midgett, 90, passed away December 24, 2022, in Chattanooga. She was born January 9, 1932, to Ulysses Daniels and Mary Elizabeth (Moore) Daniels in Nashville, TN. Irene was a graduate of Nashville Pearl High School and Tennessee State University earning a BS degree in Elementary Education. She did post graduate work at Peabody College and Tennessee State University earning an MS in Supervision and Administration.

Irene was an educator for many years in the Metro Nashville Public Schools System. Irene was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority INC, Tennessee State University Alumni Association, Nashville, Tennessee, and Tennessee Retired Teachers Association. She was a Baptist. Irene enjoyed social gatherings of all kinds, traveling, playing cards, reading, watching Alabama football, Tennessee State football, and Miami Dolphins football games.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ulysses Daniel of Oakland, CA, and Mary Elizabeth Daniels Evans of Nashville, TN; husbands, Max W Scruggs, Sr. and Johnny Midgett, Jr. She leaves to cherish her precious memories, three daughters, Afi Scruggs, Cleveland, OH, Jennifer S. Woods (Terry) Chattanooga, and Juanita Moore of Nashville, Tn.; one son, Max W. Scruggs (Christy), Nashville, TN; one brother, Edward Dibrell (Vickie), Omaha, NE; grandchildren, Enrica (Derrick) Perry, Sapriya Scruggs, Max W. Scruggs, III, Bakari Scruggs, Sr. Antonia Whitfield, Alexandria (Brandon) Mitchell, and Corine Moore all of Nashville, TN two devoted nieces, Marie Prime and Aretha Rayford both of Nashville, TN,; life time friends Dorothy Miller and Ivory McDowell and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Public viewing will be held 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM, Sunday, January 8, 2023, in the Chapel of John P Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Avenue, 423-622-9995. The Alpha Kappa Alpha Ivy Beyond the Wall will commence at 6:00 PM.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Wednesday, January 11th from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at New Covenant Church, 2201 Osage Street Nashville, TN, 37208, 615-320-1590. Interment will be held at Nashville National Cemetery 1420 Gallatin Pike s., Madison TN, 37115 615-860- 0086.
