Obituary for Herschel Daniel

On the morning of April 4, 2023, our dear grandfather, uncle and friend, Herschel Daniel was called home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Herschel Lee Daniel (Pop) was born May 28, 1927, to the late James W. and Nina Daniel (Cunningham) in Clarksville, TN. He was the 2nd of three siblings, both sisters Izetta Burke and Kathleen Vance preceded him in death. He confessed to Christ at an early age. He received his schooling in Clarksville, TN before entering the United States Army. He served his country during the Korean War.

Herschel married his 1st wife, the late Cherry Lee, and to this union his only son was born, Billy Daniel (deceased). After being honorably discharged from the Army, he relocated to Chattanooga where he met his 2nd wife, the late Fleecy Mae Boyd.

Pop was an honorable man. When his stepdaughter, Daisy W. Jones (deceased), called for help because her husband suffered a major stroke, he and Fleecy did not hesitate to move their two granddaughters to Chattanooga to live with them.

Herschel worked for many years with Anheuser-Busch (Budweiser) before becoming an entrepreneur. You may have seen him driving over the road in his 18-wheeler, or you may have seen him as he managed van transportation for CSX conductors and perhaps you may have stopped by his local bar on 3rd St, “Pa-Ki’s Corner”. If not, just maybe you remember him bringing you fresh fruits and vegetables to your door or you may have come by his stand at the local curb market. Pops was a kind man that had a way of putting any distant stranger at ease.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Chattanooga chapter. Always willing to greet you with a joke and a smile, it was no wonder that he was
the head usher at St. James Missionary Baptist Church. He was a faithful member until his failing health caused him to shift his living arrangements to assisted living.

Herschel became a resident of Coventry Place, in Decatur, GA. He quickly became the toast of the building, the unofficial new resident greeter…he was the first to the bingo table, often the winner too. He was the “other” cook in the building who offered offering downhome cuisine like chitterlings, collard greens and crackling bread…because he was a country boy that loved to cook. He was a man that was loved by both the staff and residents. They were saddened and many shed tears as Herschel said goodbye to the residents and staff. He cheated death twice, then it was time for full time care. He moved to Millington Tennessee, under the care of his eldest granddaughter, Fleecy, until the Father called him home.

Memories of his life and time will continue to be celebrated by his granddaughters, Fleecy W Ervin of Memphis, TN, and Kim (Tyree) McReynolds of Atlanta, GA; adopted grandson, Leslie (April) Blackstock of Chattanooga, TN.; great-grand kids: Clarence Anderson II, DeWayne Anderson, Christian Jones and Ashley Lyle. Special family friend, Lillian Lewis; Favorite niece, Gabrielle Trice; a host of loved ones, family, and friends.

Special thanks to the New United Missionary Baptist Church family for their love and support.

Public viewing will be held 2:00 pm- 6:00 pm Tuesday, April 11, 2023, in the chapel of the funeral home. Friends are invited to share their memories from 5:00 pm-6:00 pm. A graveside service will begin at 11:00 am Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Arrangements by John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Avenue, 423-622-9995.
