Obituary for Gloria Hood

Gloria Wyatt Hood, 80 of Chattanooga, TN was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, cousin, friend, and classmate. Gloria went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 23, 2023.

Gloria was born on July 8, 1942, to the late Curtis Sr. and Jeanette King Wyatt in Chattanooga, TN. Gloria was a graduate of the Howard High School Class of 1960 where she became a lifetime active member of her alumni chapter. Gloria also attended Chattanooga State Community College.

Though Gloria was retired, she was a volunteer Board Member for the non-profit Americans for Justice (https://americansforjustice.net) which she helped found over four years ago with her daughter.

Gloria was a faithful member of Second Missionary Baptist Church (SMBC) for over 75 years serving on multiple committees and participating in bible study, Sunday school, vacation bible school, children and youth choir to name a few. In later years, she served on the usher board as well as led the children and youth ushers. She also served on the benevolent committee, to name a few. Gloria was also part of the family ministry 1 at SMBC.

Gloria enjoyed traveling. Some of her travels included many cruises to the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Cozumel, and Bermuda. Travels overseas to Germany and France and stateside to Alabama, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Indianapolis, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, within the state of Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington D.C., Wisconsin, and Wyoming. She also enjoyed church bus trips, casino bus trips, and planning and attending family reunions. Her favorite colors were blue and green. Gloria loved watching NBA basketball games. Her favorite basketball team has always been the L.A. Lakers. At home in the evenings, you can find Gloria relaxing reading a book or her bible, watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, and playing games on her cell phone. Gloria was an avid Bid Whiz and spades player. She always enjoyed cooking and baking different cakes for family members and friends. Gloria was always the peace in the storm. Some of her sayings were “Let it go”, “You must be patient”, “God will take care of it on his time and not yours because if he does it on your time, you will not be ready to receive it nor will you do the right thing with it”, and “Take it to the Lord and leave it there”. Gloria was a sweet and wonderful person to all and will be dearly missed.

Gloria was preceded in death by her loving parents Curtis Sr. and Jeanette King Wyatt, brother Hubert Wyatt, and daughter Lori Hood Hardaway.

Gloria leaves to cherish her loving daughters Stephanie Wyatt Ellis (Leo), Valdosta, GA, and Christie Wyatt, Arlington, VA. Four grandchildren Monique Ellis (Barry Gibbons), Silver Spring, MD, Carisha Lewis Upshaw, Detroit, MI, Corbyn and Antonio Hardaway Jr., both of Chattanooga, TN, and Jalen Wyatt, Woodbridge, VA. Four great-grandchildren Isaiah, Chandler, Cariem, and Caliyah Upshaw all of Detroit, MI. Seven siblings, Evelyn Wyatt Elder, Curtis Wyatt Jr., Charles Wyatt (Tina), Gwendolyn Wyatt Jackson, Gale Wyatt Williams (Melvin), Adolph Wyatt (Trina), and Reginald Wyatt Sr. (Alfreda) all of Chattanooga, TN. Gloria also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, friends, and the remaining class members of Howard High School Class of 1960.

Public viewing will be held at Second Missionary Baptist Church Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at 10:00am, immediately followed by the funeral service at 1:00 pm. Interment will be held at Forest Hills Cemetery following the service.
