Obituary for Emma Jean Walls Price

“Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant!” (Matthew 25:21).  Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt and Friend, Emma Jean Walls Price was called to her heavenly home on Sunday, February 21, 2021.  Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on September 20, 1944 to Jimmie and Geneva Walls, Emma lived a life of faith, love and graciousness.  She is predeceased by her parents and sister, Louise (Charles) Southall.

Emma graduated with honors in 1962 from Howard High School and was awarded an academic scholarship to Tuskegee University where she earned her honors Bachelor of Science in Biology and was initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She furthered her education at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, earning a Master of Science with honors in Counseling. Ms. Price dedicated forty years to the Chattanooga Public School System and Hamilton County Schools, teaching middle school science for seventeen years and serving as a middle and high school guidance counselor for twenty years.  She retired twice from her alma mater, The Howard School, as she returned from her first retirement to serve as Howard’s college counselor for three years.  As an educator, Ms. Price was known for being a classy, stylish dresser and inspiring and enriching the lives of generations of students that she taught and counseled at Alton Park, Orchard Knob, Hixson and The Howard School.

Ms. Price has also been an inspiration within her family, grounding her children and grandchildren in faith and education. Her daughters and granddaughter followed in her HBCU footsteps, earning their graduate degrees after graduating from Spelman College, and her grandsons are studying at AAMU. Emma accepted Christ at an early age and loved the Lord and her church family at Greater Tucker Missionary Baptist Church where she was born and raised.  As a faithful Team Tucker member, she dedicated a lifetime of service in multiple leadership capacities, including president of the E.P. Crutcher Scholarship Committee, Women’s Day chairperson, Mother’s Day speaker, Usher Board No. 2 and Mission Ministry. In the words of friends of Emma Price, “She was one in a Million”, “Beautiful through and through”, “A kind and loving person”, Definitely a GEM”, “Beautiful God-fearing Woman” A True Friend”, “ALL THINGS WONDERFUL”, “Awesome Lady, Strong woman of Faith”, It’s a blessing to have known her and to love her”, “A true sweetheart and a golden light to all.”

Emma Walls Price aka “Majeanna” as she is affectionately called by her grandchildren leaves a legacy of excellence and a loving family who will cherish her memory, especially her devoted daughters, Nicelle Price Gray and Kimberly (William) Spears; granddaughter, Ataya NiCelle Spears; grandsons, Price Kenai Gray and Evan W. Spears; brothers, Jimmie Walls III and John Wesley Walls; sister, Glenda Faye Walls; nephew and nieces that grew up with Emma Jean: Charles Southall, Jr., Linda Southall Eubanks and Constance Southall Williams, and a host of beloved relatives, friends, sorors and red hatters.    

Thank you to our Queen and Matriarch for pouring all that is good and perfect into us with style, class and grace. Thank you for your consistent sweet spirit, Unwavering Faith and genuine, unconditional love. Standing on Christ-The Solid Rock, we will continue your legacy, carrying the perpetual light of your love in our hearts forever.  

Visitation is on Saturday, February 27, 2021 from 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Avenue Chattanooga, TN 37404. A private Celebration of Life is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 28, 2021 at Greater Tucker Missionary Baptist Church, Pastor Gary Hathaway, Eulogist.
