Obituary for Delia Young

Delia McPherson Young was born February 29, 1927 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to John and Mary McPherson, both of whom preceded her in death. She was the youngest of seven children, earning her the nickname, “Baby Sister,” which would extend to “Aunt Baby Sister” and “Miss Baby Sister” until she became a grandparent and the name, “Granny” reigned supreme. She is also known as “Big Granny” and “OG.”

She was educated in the Chattanooga Public School system, earning her GED. She was one of the wisest women anyone could ever know. She was a faithful Eastern Star member of Mary’s Chapter #33, a volunteer as a leader at the Boys and Girls Club, and an active church member. She always gave gladly of herself, especially where children benefited.

She was a faithful member of Community Missionary Baptist Church, serving on the Usher Board, Nurse’s Guild, as treasurer, and as the oldest mother of the church in her final years.

Delia was joined in holy matrimony to Arnold Jackson Young. This great union created a beautiful, loving family. Delia gave birth to 17 children. Later, as a widow, she would become both mother and father to her children for the remainder of her benevolent life, raising them to love God, others and self.

Delia was an amazing person. She was a devoted daughter, a loyal sister, a loving mother, an attentive aunt, a gracious grandmother, a doting great-grandmother, and a delighted great-great grandmother. She was a shining example of the “Proverbs 31” virtuous woman.

Delia’s sunset on this side of life was Saturday, July 16, 2022. She made her departure as she lived her life, surrounded by loved ones. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Young; her siblings, Mary Channell, Ruthie Appling, John McPherson, Joe McPherson, Henry McPherson, and Willie McPherson; her children, Robert C. Young; John A. Young, Joe M.R. Young, Henry A. Young; Timothy McPherson; and Delia E. Young; and devoted nephew, Sylvester Wright.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children: David E. Young, Calvin L. Young (Debra), Gwendolyn L. Young, Sylvia M. Davis, Harriett L. Armstrong, Veronica R. Dunson (Napoleon), Thomas B. Young (Brenda), Roderick L. Young (April), Reba L.
