Obituary for Alfonzo Simpson

Alfonzo "Moe" Simpson was born October 31, 1946, in Chattanooga, TN.

He attended Howard High School, where he was the "Baddest" left-handed basketball player known. He graduated from Howard High School, class of 1966. After graduation, he put in some time at Container Corporation of America and Family Dollar.

He always knew that he wanted to travel, so in 1970, after spending time in the corporate world, Alfonzo enlisted in the United States Army. He had finally found his passion and that was to lead. He quickly rose to the ranks of Sergeant First Class (SFC/E-7). Serving honorably, his military career spanned over 2 decades where he was awarded several medals and ribbons.

After his retirement from the military, he continued his leadership role and worked as a counselor at the Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center where again he retired after 15 years of faithful service.

On March 11, 2022, after a lengthy illness, Alfonzo was called to honor God’s kingdom. Alfonzo was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Eva Simpson; sisters, Sylvia Simpson, Yvonne (Dillard) Hawkins, Shirley Washington, and Norma Jean Ball; brothers, Joseph L. Simpson, Jr., Alfonzo P. Simpson, and Robert Holt.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Simpson; five daughters, Tonya Simpson-McKenzie, Tawanna Simpson-Byrd, Monica (Henry) Jackson, Eva “Punkin” Simpson, and LaToya Shropshire; two sons, Donny Mock and Marcus Sawyer; twenty grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; a devoted and beloved sister, Linda (Jimmie) Allen; brother, Richard (Syteria) Simpson; a respected and dedicated nephew, Reginald Ratliff; a host of many other family members and friends (too many to name).

Public viewing will be held from 9:00 am-11:00 am, Friday, April 1, 2022, followed immediately by a funeral service in the chapel of the funeral home.

Interment: Chattanooga National Cemetery@ 12:30 pm
